Rising from a surrounding forest of longleaf pines with a clear understory of wiregrass is Santa Rosa County’s Iron Mountain. The unmarked, mostly unknown landmark is located within Blackwater River State Forest, near the Berrydale community in north Santa Rosa County.

Snowbirds Dave and Sharyl Nye have been wintering on Navarre Beach at the Summerwinds Resort for five years from Decatur, AL which is 30 minutes from the border of Tennessee. And, yes, Dave is a distant relative of Bill Nye the Science guy. “You can trace every “Nye” to a guy that came over from England,” said Dave. Dave has never met Bill Nye but they have science in the gene pool. Dave retired as a chemist from General Electric and his wife, Sharyl retired as a technical specialist for a school system. South Dakota is “home” for both of them because that is where they met. They have two children, Greg and Susan and five grandchildren.
Votes were tallied last Tuesday and incumbent Charles Enghauser and Daryl Lynchard were elected Holley-Navarre Water System board members, receiving more than 90 percent of the votes.
Only seven votes separated Enghauser and Lynchard, but the difference between Lynchard and Ashley Strabala, the candidate who received the third highest vote total, was 459 votes.
The second-seeded Navarre Lady Raiders drew a tough schedule in the district playoffs starting with Crestview in the first round. The next night, they were scheduled to play Niceville; a team they had never beaten. If they won both, then they would probably face number one seed, Pace.
