Gag grouper, Gulf scallop seasons open

Two popular seasons for northwest Florida anglers and sportsmen started this past week. Gag grouper opened for recreational harvest in most Gulf of Mexico state waters and all federal waters July 1. The Bay scallop season opened June 28 in a limited area stretching from the Pasco-Hernando county line to the west bank of the Mexico Beach Canal in Bay County.

Slime, snow, air powered rockets, catapults and God … might seem like an odd combination, but all the pieces fit perfectly together at the Basic Elements Vacation Bible School (VBS) June 23 – 26 at Midway Baptist Church. Minister of Discipleship and Evangelism Pete Belmain said about 150 children and adults enjoyed the science inspired, Christ focused VBS.

The Thursdays in the Park free summer concert series has been a staple in the Navarre community for several years, but June 26 concert-goers experienced a first. Michael Cadena from San Antonio, Texas, proposed to his girlfriend Erin Harnist on stage during the intermission of Exit 4’s concert.

With a full slate of swim meets scheduled for July, Coach Mary Moorer scheduled a mock swim meet June 21 at the Betty J. Pullum Family YMCA in Navarre. “We have a lot of swimmers on the team this year that are new to competitive swimming,” Moorer said. “We wanted to get them used to meet conditions before the July meets are held.”

Combined training good but safety concerns remain

Navarre Beach lifeguards and Navarre Beach firefighters conducted their first, official joint training exercise of the season June 21. Training between the two groups is conducted several times annually but this was the first official training since the drowning of a tourist from Louisiana in late May. The 19-year-old entered the water on a red flag day west of the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier, where lifeguards are not stationed, and unfortunately was caught up in a rip tide.
