The East River Smokehouse on Highway 98 in Navarre lived up to its name last Wednesday as buildup of residue in the barbecue fire pit chimney briefly caught fire and created a lot of smoke at about 10 a.m.
Troubles continue for Navarre businesswoman Dorothy Slye, whose Sandy Bottoms retail store, which occupied a county-owned building on Navarre Beach, is now closed. Slye owed delinquent taxes on the property totaling $20,577. Tax collector records show Sigma Tax LL of Aventura, Florida purchased the tax certificate, which ultimately went unsold at an Oct. 28 auction.
The Lady Raiders soccer team beat a very good Pensacola High team 2 – 0 in the first preseason game at NYSA on Oct. 24. Two days later, they scored a solid 4 – 2 win over another powerhouse, West Florida, in their second preseason match.
The Lady Raiders finished fifth at the District 2, Class 3A Cross Country Meet (a 5K race-3.2 miles) at Lynn Haven Mosley High School last Saturday. Running in the same district as perennial powerhouses Fort Walton, Niceville, and Choctaw, the ladies finished just 50 points from qualifying the team for Regionals.
For the children living in the poverty-stricken Sicuani District in Peru, medical treatment for congenital abnormalities such as webbed feet and extra fingers and even injuries such as broken bones and burns can go untreated for months, or even years.
Navarre High School students put on a production of “The Great Gatsby” last weekend, and both Friday and Saturday night the cast performed to a large audience in the school’s cafeteria.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and local middle schools are encouraging students to not only treat others with respect, but also to speak up if they see others being mistreated as well.
Donna Miller will be lifting weights on November 16 at the NPC Flex Fest at the Pensacola Bay Center. But the heaviest weight will be lifted from Miller’s heart and mind.
