TDC committee discusses end to annual tour funding

A decade ago the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC) started the annual Beaches to Woodlands Tour in an effort to create a “shoulder” season to expand tourism past the area’s traditional ending marker, Labor Day. The event started out featuring events along a countywide route during a couple of weekends each October but gradually became a festival lasting the entire month, highlighting Santa Rosa’s arts & culture, heritage and outdoor venues.

Sunshine law hampers RESTORE Act in Florida

Four states impacted by the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill have already received a draft of the much anticipated RESTORE Act implementation regulations from the U.S. Department of Treasury. Santa Rosa is not among those, and fingers are being pointed at the state’s open government laws.

I also heard the TDC used to have police offers during Memorial Day weekend to help alleviate traffic and the county attorney said something about it being “illegal” to have hired cops.  So…I guess more needs to be done – or looked into. I’m glad we have so much traffic because that means commerce is happening. As a resident of Navarre, I just know better than to go to the beach even though I really wanted to go take pictures.

Santa Rosa County consistently scores high in annual FCAT testing, but this year third graders tied for first, achieving the highest FCAT math scale scores in the state, which has 67 counties.  Additionally, fourth, eighth and tenth grade students each tied for third highest in the state for mean scale score in writing, according to school district officials.

Wow, what a weekend. The first event I attended was the Emerald Coast Chapter of Heroes on the Water. What a great group of guys and gals. They are a well-oiled machine and they know exactly what to do and in what order to do it.

Surfing through the pain

Kayla Barton almost turned her car around twice on the way to Navarre Beach from Dothan, Ala. Her back hurt and it started raining during the more-than-two-hour drive. But, she kept moving forward — and she’s sure glad she did.

One of our favorite Navarre events is back.  The Navarre Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Thursdays in the Park Concert Series starts tonight, and as co-hosts of the event, we invite everyone to come out and enjoy the music.  Admission is FREE.  Tonight’s performance happens to be the kickoff of another great event happening in Navarre, The First Annual Songwriter’s Festival.  You can see ads about both of these events in our paper this week to get all of the details and schedules.
