Out and About

We are looking for additional writers and correspondents for all three of our news organizations. And we need an administrative assistant for the front office at Navarre Press.

Beach restoration timing depends on FEMA environmental assessment

FEMA is standing by its decision not to allow restoration of eastern Navarre Beach, according to Santa Rosa County Assistant Environmental Director Tanya Linzy.

“Currently, the draft SEA – Supplemental Environmental Assessment – indicates that ‘the (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) found the Navarre Beach Renourishment Project as inconsistent with the purposes of the CBRA,’” Linzy wrote in an email to Navarre Press. “With that understanding, FEMA will not allow renourishment in the CBRA zone.”

Out and About

I’ve been mostly out this week and about in other parts of Florida. Sarasota to be specific.

We brought seven of us to the Florida Press Conference to learn the latest trends and best practices in journalism and design. We also had our awards ceremony, and while Navarre Press didn’t win the overall trophy for our division, Santa Rosa Press Gazette did.

Out and About

I recently attended the graduation ceremony for my son-in-law, Jon Crider, who graduated with his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Mississippi, otherwise known as Ole Miss.

He also wrote for Navarre Press for a year before he married my daughter in 2016 and left for Mississippi to pursue his doctorate degree. You may see his byline in the coming weeks. He starts teaching at Belmont University in the fall and will be working on data driven stories as a data journalist this summer.

Looking back, looking ahead

The school year is coming to a close.

With that in mind, Navarre Press sat down with Santa Rosa District Schools’ superintendent Dr. Karen Barber to talk about the school year’s biggest successes, challenges and the new things coming to county schools in fall 2023.

Mother’s Day through the eyes of faith leaders

Mothers play an important role in our lives. They also play an important role in the Bible, especially Mary, the mother of Jesus, who Christians believe was not only the Son of God but the salvation of all mankind.

With Mother’s Day coming up, Navarre Press reached out to several female church leaders in the Navarre area to talk about motherhood and how it intertwines with their faith.

Jorgenson: Milton ‘welcomes’ audit ‘for real or perceived purposes’

Milton City Manager Randy Jorgenson on Thursday said the city “welcomes an audit of our operations at any time for any real or perceived purpose.” Navarre Press learned earlier in the day that Florida Sen. Doug Broxson, R-Gulf Breeze, had asked the Joint Legislative Auditing Committee to audit the city and its utilities because of concerns about increasing costs to build a new wastewater treatment plant.

Rudman pleased with early legislative session progress

The 2023 legislative session in Tallahassee began March 7.
With bills and joint resolutions making their way through the state House and Senate, State Rep. Dr. Joel Rudman (R- Navarre) spoke with Navarre Press on his first go round as a representative, how his bills are doing and what people can expect from the rest of this year’s session.
