Rep. Broxson talks business at NABOR

Business is good in the State of Florida, and State Representative Doug Broxson provided a few examples while serving as guest speaker at last Friday’s Navarre Area Board of Realtors (NABOR) monthly membership meeting.

Gulf states get first $113M from oil spill fines 

JACKSON, Miss. — The five states that border the Gulf of Mexico are getting $113 million to improve the environment, the first small chunk of $2.5 billion that BP and Transocean were fined as a result of criminal pleas last year following the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

County testing switch to LED bulbs

Don Richards, president of United Peninsula Association, which represents roughly two dozen homeowners associations, appeared before county commissioners with a possible cost-saving measure last Tuesday.  Richards was joined by City of Gulf Breeze officials to recommend the switch to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs at county-owned facilities for cost savings.

Melvin takes helm or reorganized commission

The Santa Rosa Board of County Commissioners held its annual reorganization meeting last Thursday, and District 4 Commissioner Jim Melvin was selected as Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners for the 2013-2014 year. Commissioner Don Salter was picked as vice-chairman.

County expected to grant funding requests

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Wendell Hall has requested an additional $904,700 for capital purchases from County Commissioners, mostly to replace aging patrol vehicles.  Clerk of Court Don Spencer made a similar, albeit smaller, request, in seeking a one-time allocation of $84,697 to fund step raises for employees.  Commissioners are expected to approve both funding requests through the Capital Reserve Fund at the December 12meeting.

Committee to form, research community center

Just as it was for an online survey about the subject, public opinion was split among a small group gathered at the Navarre community center public meeting on Monday evening. However, there was one thing that nearly all of the approximately 20 people in attendance agreed upon — a committee comprised of citizens will be formed to further look into the matter.

Clary clears land without permits

Former state senator Charles Clary will face possible fines in connection to the recent removal of protected trees on a piece of property that he owns on Navarre Parkway backing the Cotton Bay Estates subdivision.

Blaylock proposes new storm water plan

Santa Rosa County Engineer Roger Blayock outlined development of a new master plan to address the county’s storm water problems last Monday at the Board of County Commissioners’ meeting.  Blaylock proposed a three-phase approach which calls for detailed plans in specific watershed areas.
