Baptist, Sacred Heart adopt tobacco-free hiring

Baptist Health Care and Sacred Heart Health Sys­tem will start the New Year with a healthy choice for themselves and for others, as they adopted tobacco­-free hiring policies begin­ning Jan. 1, 2014. Current employees who use tobacco products were not affected by the poli­cy. To encourage healthy lifestyles, Baptist Health Care and Sacred Heart Health System are currently, and will continue to offer, tobac­co cessation assistance to existing team members. Baptist Health Care and Sacred Heart Health Sys­tem worked with the Partnership for a Healthy Community (PFAHC) on an assessment of the state of health in the two-coun­ty area that includes Escam­bia and Santa Rosa. Results revealed discouraging sta­tistics related to tobacco use, obesity and health management. Baptist Health Care and Sacred Heart Health Sys­tem became smoke-free campuses in 2010. The hir­ing policy is another step in support of a healthy work­force.

The Watoto Children’s Choir has sung for presi­dents, has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and toured internationally for almost 20 years. And now, the world-renowned choir has performed in Navarre — at the Navarre First Assembly of God on Feb. 13.

Teacher of the Year

On Feb. 1, Ann Thompson, third-grade teacher at West Navarre Intermediate School, was named Santa Rosa County Teacher of the Year. Superintendent Tim Wyrosdick, Santa Rosa School Board members, members of the Teacher of the Year Selection Committee and Santa Rosa Education Foundation directors came to Thompson’s classroom to deliver the good news. Thompson had been teaching for eight years, and prior to that she worked as a medical technician. She is also the president of the local charity Caring and Sharing of South Santa Rosa County.

Lady Raiders get first-ever win over Gulf Breeze

In Rob Simon’s first year coaching at Navarre, the Raiders lost to Gulf Breeze both during the regular season and in the playoffs. Since then, there have been five years of ties. The Raiders finally broke through on Dec. 17 in an away contest, as the Raiders won in exciting fashion over Gulf Breeze, 5 – 4.
