Future of existing courthouse

Milton attorney Matthew Hargraves started a petition to keep the courthouse downtown. However, Guy Thompson, mayor of the City of Milton, opposes the idea. Thompson and others hope the facility will become a community center, featuring retail stores and possibly an expanded library.

No criminal charges in 2013 fatal crash near Hurlburt

The Florida Highway Patrol reported March 18 that no criminal charges are being filed in a seven-vehicle fatal accident that occurred June 13, 2013, at Cody Avenue and Highway 98. Two Bradenton, Fla. residents, 66-year-old Kurt Graetzer and 63-year-old Pamela Graetzer died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Done ‘hopefully’ by Memorial Day

Crews this week are starting a project to add a second left turn-lane to accommodate motorists heading north from the Navarre Beach Bridge onto Highway 98. The project is scheduled to take 60 days and that means it should be completed about a week prior to the busy Memorial Day weekend.

Authorities seek help in Arson investigation

The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office announced March 14 that they are seeking assistance from the public in solving an arson investigation. The sheriff’s office is working with the Division of State Fire Marshal’s Office on the case.

County property reconsidered for courthouse

For three weeks Santa Rosa County Commission Chairman Jim Melvin heard citizens protesting county plans to spend $3.75 million on a site for the proposed courthouse. Opposition was so strong that Melvin felt it doomed the entire project, which depends on voters passing a temporary sales tax increase. Therefore, he added site selection back to board’s agenda March 13.

A second request for the county commission to allocate $7,500 to survey Navarre residents by phone about a future community center failed again due to lack of support. Now an advisory committee will revisit conducting another online survey.

Raiders beat Escambia, lose to Niceville and Crestview

Navarre hosted new district rival Niceville March 4. Jared Gonzalez and Michael Sandle both singled in the first inning, but the Raiders were unable to score a run.  Meanwhile, Jeffery Rutledge was keeping the Eagles off the bases and off the scoreboard.
