Navarre lifters dominate sectional, 11 qualify for state

Navarre High School has finished second or tied for second in the Florida High School Athletics Association girls’ weightlifting finals in four of the past five seasons. Last week, the Lady Raiders won their fifth straight sectional meet and qualified 11 lifters to try to win the school’s first team title Feb. 9 in Kissimmee.

Combined forces increase service in state parks

When the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) acquired additional personnel from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (DACS) last year, its staff gained new responsibilities. Now, FWC officers patrol all of Florida’s woods and waters, including its state forests and state parks.

Prescribed fires vital tool

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Florida Park Service is observing Prescribed Fire Awareness Week from Jan. 27-Feb. 2. Prescribed fires mimic naturally occurring fires and can help prevent devastating wildfires. Park staff, guided by detailed plans called prescriptions, conduct prescribed burns as a regular and important part of their land management activities in state parks and trails. Prescribed fire is a safe way to apply a natural process, ensure ecosystem health and reduce wildfire risk. Many state parks and trails will be conducting prescribed burns in the coming months.
