Pensacola Chamber leader presents two-county ED plan

“This is unprecedented,” said Jim Hizer, President and CEO of the Greater Pensacola Chamber as he was updating the Santa Rosa commissioners on VISION 2015. The vision of the future is indeed looking good for the chamber’s job-creation initiative focused on recruiting new businesses, helping local businesses expand and strengthening the partnerships between the military and the private industry in the Pensacola region. 

Complaints of SRC practices produce procedural change

Following a citizen’s complaint to the State Attorney’s Office, Santa Rosa County Attorney, Angela Jones, has decided she will no longer alter or allow alteration of ordinances following the county issuing public notices and provided public inspection but prior to enactment.

County attorney prompts closed meetings

Certain meetings held by the Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners are now off limits to the public, following approval of an idea suggested by County Attorney Angela Jones.   Jones, citing an exemption in Florida Statutes, advised commissioners to consider a policy excluding the public from meetings involving: 

County third-graders tie for top FCAT math scores

Santa Rosa County consistently scores high in annual FCAT testing, but this year third graders tied for first, achieving the highest FCAT math scale scores in the state, which has 67 counties.  Additionally, fourth, eighth and tenth grade students each tied for third highest in the state for mean scale score in writing, according to school district officials.

Murphy presents softball awards

The Navarre High School softball team banquet was held May 16. Coach Scott Murphy thanked the coaches, parents and team for their efforts, which led to a 17-7 record for the season.

Offense will be the key to Raider boys’ soccer season

In its first year under coach Ken MacDonald, the Navarre High School boys’ soccer team had one of its best seasons ever. The Raiders beat Tallahassee Chiles 2-1 in their opening regional playoff game. A few days later, it took a last-minute Niceville goal to eliminate the Raiders in the region semifinal game.

Vinnie R’s widow establishes baseball scholarship

Before a baseball game this spring at Navarre High School, Paulette Rollant gripped the baseball, went through her wind up, and threw a perfect pitch to Raiders’ catcher Matt Marshall. Presidents, dignitaries, celebrities and former big league players who have attempted and failed miserably to throw a ceremonial first pitch would have been impressed. More importantly, Dan Rollant could not have possibly been more proud. Not only for Paulette’s execution of the pitch, but for what she has done to honor him since his death in December 2011.

Baseball boosters present awards at banquet

The Navarre High School Baseball Booster Club held its annual dinner and awards banquet on Thursday, May 16, in the Parish Center of St. Sylvester Catholic Church. Players, coaches, Diamond Girls, family members and special guests attended the event.
