It’s officially the first week of hurricane season, and the Support Alliance For Emergency Readiness (SAFER) wasted no time providing Santa Rosa County residents with the right information to be as prepared as possible for a disaster.
In light of the recent outbreak of wildfires in Santa Rosa County, including a large fire in the Midway area, coupled with a dry spell which makes the area susceptible to fires spreading quickly, parents and guardians are advised to keep a close watch on kids as we begin summer break.
The 2013 legislative session is a wrap, and Florida now has the largest budget in its history at $74.1 billion dollars, of which $30 billion comes from federal sources. Governor Rick Scott made $368 million line item vetoes to the budget before signing into law as the General Appropriations Act, which takes effect July 1.
Ground was broken on a new community center for South Santa Rosa County on May 31, with local and state officials as well as community representatives on hand to turn dirt onto a site already showing signs of progress.

Pensacola State College sophomore second baseman Kelly Hayes recently was honored by the Florida College System Activities Association as the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Council for Athletic Affairs Executive Board votes for the award’s winner from among the individual female sport winners. Hayes — a former Navarre High standout — was eligible for the award by winning the Jean Williams award for the outstanding female softball scholar athlete in the FCSAA.
FORT MYERS – James McGhee’s two-run double gave Pensacola Catholic the runs it needed to secure its second-straight Class 4A state championship and a perfect 30-0 season – and likely the unofficial national championship.
