Residents protest tax hike, Sheriff asks public for help

More than 50 citizens attended the first of two public hearings on Santa Rosa County’s $100 million budget for fiscal year 2014 held last Tuesday. About one-third of the attendees, mostly Tea Party supporters, spoke out against a proposed property tax increase. However, three of the five commissioners voted for further consideration of the measure, which is aimed to fund raises for county employees, who have not received a bump in pay since a 2009 merit increase.

Three Navarre establishments issued food safety warnings

Three local food establishments have been cited recently for critical food safety violations.  McDonald’s and Taco Bell on Navarre Parkway, and the Pier Bar & Grill, operated by The Pier, Inc., which runs the Navarre Beach Pier were all issued warnings during health inspections in recent months.  The issue with Taco Bell, however, is related to a fire earlier this year which forced the closure of the business, which has yet to re-open.

With several complaints about anglers spearfishing near the reefs on Navarre Beach recently, residents and visitors are being reminded that spearfishing is prohibited in that area, per Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission rules.
