In celebration of Mardi Gras, the new Navarre Fishing Pier management team served beer and wine and hosted live entertainment on the deck Feb. 22. The group plans to reopen the pier bar March 14 after facing weather-related and other unexpected delays, including demolition of the previous bar by the former pier operator.
A local resident and chamber of commerce enthusiast – Kristen Loera – will begin leading the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce tomorrow. The chamber’s board of directors announced Loera’s selection Feb. 20. Loera replaces Josie Cotti, who announced her resignation from the chamber in January.
Santa Rosa County has built up a general fund reserve of $22,137,847. That fund is unrestricted and may be used for purposes such as operating the county during a disaster. Santa Rosa County’s total reserves top $36 million, but some of those funds are restricted, committed or assigned for a specific use.

A man posing as a door-to-door salesman robbed a residence on Forester Road Sunday night, according to a Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office offense report. The man was described as a white male possibly in his 20s, 5’10 to 6-feet-tall with brown hair and an unshaven scruffy look.
The Citizens to Incorporate Navarre Political Action Committee is actively seeking signatures in an effort to persuade county officials to put a nonbinding straw poll to gauge interest in Navarre becoming a city on the August 26 primary ballot. The group met last night at the Navarre Conference Center to provide an update on their efforts.

Naval Air Station (NAS) Whiting Field – NAS Whiting Field is participating in Solid Curtain-Citadel Shield ’14, an anti-terrorism/force protection exercise that will be conducted on all continental United States Naval installations through Feb. 28. The exercise began Feb. 18.
Recently Santa Rosa County was awarded two defense-related state grants. A $200,000 infrastructure grant will be used to continue property acquisitions to buffer NAS Whiting Field operations, and an $80,000 grant will be used to fund military support services, including a study of local military retirees.
