Songwriter festival a hit

The Second Annual Navarre Beach Songwriter Festival was held May 16 – 18 at five venues in the Navarre area. The event featured singer-songwriters from the local area, as well as other who traveled from as far away as Nashville, Tennessee.

Airports gear up for season

As the Emerald Coast prepares for the peak of tourist season, Pensacola International Airport will have 13 percent more seats available for passengers than last year. Airport Manager Greg Donavon said the increase means 5,700 seats will be available each day starting in June.

Fort Walton Beach couple faces animal cruelty charges

The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office arrested 32-year-old Jessie Eugene Morris and 25-year-old Amber Leard-Morris of Fort Walton Beach May 9 after deputies responded to a complaint of a man beating a dog with a piece of lumber and then holding it down by its neck with the lumber against its throat.

Pensacola Bay ferry service on the horizon

Members of the Florida-Alabama Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) received an update on the future Pensacola Bay ferry service at their April 9 meeting in Milton. Dan Brown, Gulf Islands National Seashore (GINS) park superintendent, said the ferry service is projected to being in March 2017.

Keeping structures safe from fires

Florida Forest Service (FFS) crews responded to seven separate wildfires in north Santa Rosa County, totaling more than 180 acres Wednesday, May7. According to FFS, one structure was threatened by crews were able to use tractors to create a line between the fire and the home. The Bagdad Volunteer Fire Department and Avalon Fire Rescue were also dispatched in support of the forest service.

E-2C Hawkeye completes museum’s collection

A five-person crew flew a newly-painted E-2C Hawkeye May 9 from Norfolk, Va., to NAS Pensacola. It was the plane’s final flight and shortly after it landed it was presented to the National Naval Aviation Museum. The Hawkeye was the only Navy Fleet aircraft not on display at the museum.
