Hurricane season begins June 1

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) May 22 issued its 2014 Atlantic hurricane season outlook and is forecasting a near-normal or below-normal season for tropical activity. However, Daniel Hahn from Santa Rosa Emergency Management urges residents to be prepared.

Navarre reefs grow in size, activity

The near shore artificial reefs of Navarre Beach in the Gulf of Mexico are growing. According to Mike Sandler, a member of the Navarre Beach Marine Sanctuary committee, the growth is attributed to increased sand levels as well as new marine life.

Beach wells supplying water

The first water well on Navarre Beach was drilled in 1964 and tapped the upper Floridian aquifer, said Santa Rosa County Engineer Roger Blaylock. “Additional wells were drilled into that aquifer and provided water on the beach until 2000, when a line was taken beneath the Santa Rosa Sound providing a different source of water for the island.”

Bragging rights go to the defensive Maroon squad as they bested the White offensive players, 41-35, May 22 in the annual Maroon-White Navarre Raider Spring football game. Although defense officially won the day, in reality, the offensive prowess on both sides of the ball captured the spotlight.

Sheriff’s office welcomes two new K-9 teams

Recently two Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies were chosen to move from the traffic unit to the K-9 unit, increasing the total K-9 teams at the agency from four to six.

FWC continues bear management efforts

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) held the last of six public meetings Tuesday to discuss bear management in the eastern portion of the panhandle. The final meeting was held in Port St. Joe for the area designated as the East Panhandle Bear Management Unit (BMU), which focuses on the Apalachicola National Forest and surrounding areas.

Sea turtle group honors FWC biologist
