Two county recycling centers to close

Santa Rosa County Commissioners voted Feb. 27 to permanently close two of the county’s 23 recycle drop-off sites. The Tiger Point Park Road and Five Points/Chumuckla Highway recycling drop off sites will permanently close March 14 due to health and safety risks resulting from illegal dumping.

‘Who’ knew

The Navarre Library joined others in the county and across the country in celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born March 2, 1904 in Springfield, Mass., and the library had special displays and activities ready for the young and young-at-heart Friday, Saturday and Monday.

Sea turtle conservation center closes for improvements

The Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center (NBSTCC) closed its doors Saturday in preparation for construction of a new pool and observation deck and improvements to the interpretative portion of the center. Volunteers completed inventory and locked the doors shortly after 2 p.m.

Clerk’s site shows county money information

Santa Rosa County Clerk of Court and Comptroller Donald Spencer made good on his campaign promise to put county financial information online. Spencer’s site contains not only audited financial statements but also a monthly investment report.

Commissioners comment on straw poll request

The Citizens to Incorporate Navarre Political Action Committee is seeking signatures in an effort to show Santa Rosa County commissioners enough support exists to place a nonbinding straw poll on the Aug. 26 primary election ballot. Incorporation supporters approached the commissioners in 2012 making the same request but were turned down.

Navarre area may see more F-35s

If the Air Force gets its first choice for operating the F-35 joint strike fighter, then Navarre residents may see more of them in the skies around the area.

Pets and livestock can sometimes fall prey to predators including coyotes. A small dog reportedly was injured during a coyote attack last week at Eglin Air Force Base.

FWC biologists rescue panther kitten

A one-week-old panther kitten was rescued by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists while conducting field research in mid-January at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge in Collier County, east of Naples. FWC reported the 1-pound male kitten had a dangerously low body temperature and was nonresponsive.

Tuskegee Airman shares life lessons at Hurlburt

“Keep your bags packed because you never know when a door of opportunity will open for you,” said Retired Chief Master Sgt. Walter Richardson during a presentation Feb. 19 before nearly 200 airmen in Hurlburt Field’s King Auditorium. He was one of 1,500 enlisted men selected to begin desegregation of the military in 1949.
