Raiders prevail in battle with Trojans

There was never a feeling Navarre was in any danger of losing to Tallahassee Lincoln in a girls soccer showdown Friday night at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

The Raiders did what they needed to do to stay a step ahead of the Trojans in a game that wasn’t always pretty but looked it on the scoreboard in the form of a 4-2 victory.

It was the Raiders’ first game back on the field since Dec. 20.

It was a sloppy game at times on a sloppy field beaten up by all the rain over the last couple of weeks.

“I’m proud of the way we continued to battle and fight,” Navarre head coach Rob Simon said. “At times, we did some nice stuff. And at times it was pretty ugly.”

In a matchup pitting two playoff-caliber teams against each other, the Raiders got the kind of challenging game they wanted coming off a break. Never mind that they had only two days of training ahead of their first game of 2019.

“I’m glad our first game back was against a team as quality as Lincoln,” Simon said. “They made us work. You could tell we hadn’t played in about three weeks. We had a lot of mistakes, but the class of our girls shone through in getting the win.”
