Public Hearing Thursday for adding to property taxes

An important meeting is being held tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. at the regular commissioners meeting at 6495 Caroline Street in the commissioners’ chambers. If you haven’t heard about it, please listen up. These public hearings were advertised by our county in Escambia County (Pensacola News Journal) – not Santa Rosa County.

Under Florida Statute 166.041(3)(a), (3)(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (c) and (d), a proposed ordinance may be read by title, or in full, on at least 2 separate days and shall, at least 10 days prior to adoption, be noticed once in a newspaper of general circulation in the municipality. The notice of proposed enactment shall state the date, time, and place of the meeting; the title or titles of proposed ordinances; and the place or places within the municipality where such proposed ordinances may be inspected by the public. The notice shall also advise that interested parties may appear at the meeting and be heard with respect to the proposed ordinance.

Tomorrow is a public hearing on three taxing units commissioners are considering adding to your property taxes. We have a summary of each below:

  • Roadway Improvements Municipal Service Taxing Unit for road improvements and maintenance providing for the collection by the ad valorem assessment procedure and disposition of those funds. Among the highlights are – this includes the entire including incorporated areas. It will be funded through the annual adoption of a resolution levying an ad valorem tax millage not in excess of 10 mills on the dollar of assessed value of all property within the unit.
  • Public Safety Services Municipal Service Taxing Unit providing for the collection by the ad valorem assessment procedure and disposition of those funds. This only includes unincorporated areas. The unit will be funded through the annual adoption of a resolution levying an ad valorem tax millage not in excess of 10 mills on the dollar of assessed value of all property within the unit without the necessity of a referendum.
  • Stormwater Maintenance Municipal Service Benefit Unit for stormwater maintenance, repairs, and retention pond improvements of several county maintained subdivisions described as:
