Navarre community donates 13,000 lbs. of food

Looking for some unique finds, affordable clothes or holiday decorations? Come shop at Good Neighbor Thrift Store.

And what is the best part of shopping here? Proceeds of the store go back into ministry and directly help the people of Navarre.

Maggie Garcia sorts through food donations.

They are open, both for shopping and accepting donations, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Good Neighbor Thrift Store, We Care Ministries and the Lindy Bush Food Pantry are all ministries of the Navarre United Methodist Church.

This year the Navarre community donated 13,070 pounds of food during the Stamp Out Hunger Letter Carrier Food Drive, which all comes to the Lindy Bush Food Pantry, located behind the Good Neighbor Thrift Store. This is a national, annual event held the second Saturday of May. The We Care Ministry, located behind the thrift store, will distribute the food to those in need right here in our area throughout the year.

Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties combined to total 150,455 pounds.

Our amazing volunteers work hard sorting and dating all food products to ensure that all food distributed is within date for the safety and dignity of our clients.

“We take pride in our work here in the pantry and in serving the community,” said Lisa, one of the volunteers working on the food donated this year. “It makes my heart feel good.”

“I am just amazed at the generosity of the community,” said Maggie, as she works through the mass of canned goods. “Being able to help those in need is what motivates me. There are so many families struggling right now, and I am so glad to be able to help.”

“Being able to meet people in the community and being able to help them is the best,” volunteer Marleen said. “This is a wonderful hands-on ministry opportunity.”

“The Navarre post office staff and rural carriers help make the food drive such a success and run so smoothly,” said Manager Laura Beth Snow, who manages the food pantry.

The pantry and We Care, as well as the Good Neighbor Thrift Store, are all ministries of the Navarre United Methodist Church.

“We are a small store that does great big things,” Snow said.

The proceeds from the thrift store go right back into the community and the ministries of the church. The store, We Care Ministries and the food pantry, have approximately 130 volunteers, who all work together, making Navarre a better place.

Jo Mason is the thrift store librarian.

“We are in the business of helping people and the community, and I love it”, said Jo, the thrift store librarian.

Snow is very thankful for the numerous volunteers that dedicate their time to helping the mission of Good Neighbor Thrift Store. She is also blessed to have her assistant managers Candace Anderson and Cuyler Jones as part of the Good Neighbor team.

“Candace and Clark (Cuyler) are a key part of our process and our success,” Snow brags on her assistants. “They are so talented and really keep the place running along smoothly. I am so fortunate to have such great people to work alongside. We three make a great team.”
