HNFD Chief Kevin Lewis was first to arrive on scene and confirmed a fully involved double-wide mobile home. A 120-gallon propane tank adjacent to the structure was actively venting flames through its safety valve, adding significant hazard to the scene. The home’s occupant had fortunately managed to escape prior to the fire department’s arrival.
He reported waking to smoke inside the residence and, along with his dog, evacuated safely. The individual was later treated on scene for smoke inhalation and transported by Lifeguard EMS to Gulf Breeze Hospital.
Chief Lewis directed crews to deploy a 2.5” hose line to knock down the bulk of the fire. Firefighters were forced to carefully cool the pressurized propane tank while awaiting the arrival of the gas company to mitigate the risk of explosion. Despite the aggressive fire attack, the mobile home was declared a total loss. The American Red Cross was requested to assist the displaced homeowner.
No firefighter injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
