County honors amateur radio operators

Locals who were in the area after Hurricane Ivan in 2005 remember all too well the post-storm communications blackout. In such situations, amateur radio operators become a crucial link between communities and emergency management officials. County commissioners honored the vital part they play during disasters with a proclamation June 26.
Navarre CERT volunteers Mike Wooley and Ralph Agnew operated a ham radio Sunday afternoon as part of the group’s participation in the American Radio Relay League’s Amateur Radio Field Day. During the 24-hours event, local volunteers made contact with other radio operators in Colorado, Hawaii and Spain.
