Boo beats Tiger, but local charities are real winners
Santa Rosa County native Boo Weekley scored his third PGA victory on May 26 at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Ft. Worth, Tex. Subsequently, he found himself competing against golf legend Tiger Woods and two others for the PGA Tour’s Player of the Month, a contest in which the sponsor, Avis, donates $50,000 to charities chosen by the winners, who are selected solely based on fan votes. Although Weekley was ultimately named Player of the Month, two nonprofit organizations serving local children in need are the true winners, raking in $25,000 each.

Navarre’s Gavin Wehby experiences storybook season
Last year, Gavin Wehby had to make a difficult decision. The two-sport athlete would have to decide whether he should continue at Navarre High School or transfer to Pensacola Catholic for his junior and senior year. To make matters more difficult, his parents told him the decision was his alone.

Former Raider earns state academic award
Pensacola State College sophomore second baseman Kelly Hayes recently was honored by the Florida College System Activities Association as the Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. The Council for Athletic Affairs Executive Board votes for the award’s winner from among the individual female sport winners. Hayes — a former Navarre High standout — was eligible for the award by winning the Jean Williams award for the outstanding female softball scholar athlete in the FCSAA.

Raiders pull out a last second victory in jamboree
The Raider defense allowed 404 yards against Escambia in the first game of the Jamboree. However, they came up big with two turnovers that helped to propel the Raiders to an 18 – 14 come-from-behind win over the Bulldogs in the game played at Crestview on May 24.

In its first year under coach Ken MacDonald, the Navarre High School boys’ soccer team had one of its best seasons ever. The Raiders beat Tallahassee Chiles 2-1 in their opening regional playoff game. A few days later, it took a last-minute Niceville goal to eliminate the Raiders in the region semifinal game.

The Navarre High School softball team banquet was held May 16. Coach Scott Murphy thanked the coaches, parents and team for their efforts, which led to a 17-7 record for the season.
