Jared Fisher is in his first year as a cross-country runner.

It could have been one of those program-defining nights. Less than two years into its existence, the University of West Florida’s football team found itself on the cusp of a victory over a ranked opponent and with an opportunity to emerge as a surprise contender in the Gulf South Conference.

It was quiet inside the Navarre Raiders locker room Friday night. Maybe not to the point where you could hear a pin drop, but quiet enough to know the game didn’t go as planned.

A game against a winless team proved to be much tougher than expected, but after a rugged first half, the University of West Florida football team came to life in the second to knock off Mississippi College 28-14 in Gulf South Conference action Friday night at Blue Wahoos Stadium.

At the end of the night Tuesday, with the Navarre Raiders on the difficult end of a four-game loss to Pensacola, head coach Michelle Lee could only wonder what might have been if her volleyball team had played up to its potential.

As the season winds down for Navarre’s swim team, the focus is turning to the upcoming district meet.

Shelby Freese plays with emotion and energy. She plays with heart, too, and leaves everything she has on the floor for the Gulf Coast State volleyball team.

Navarre swim coach Mary Moorer never expected her team to be in a situation late in the season where it didn’t have a pool to use.

Navarre’s boys and girls swim teams competed at the Panama City Beach Invitational Saturday. The boys placed 13th and the girls were 15th. A total of 20 teams competed.

Chris Williams shot through the defense untouched, running with unmatched determination in every step of a 55-yard run.
