Tori Martino entered her senior season of college soccer at Indiana University-East unsure of what was ahead.

Twice in the preseason the team was forced into a mandatory two-week quarantine. A player tested positive for COVID-19 before practice began and another player tested positive in the middle of preseason play.

But a little precipitation on an afternoon in late October isn’t going to keep the Raiders from putting in the necessary work to prepare for a season that is filled with both high hopes and, of course, uncertainty because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Garrett Bagley is quick to push away any comparisons of his 2019 state runner-up girls weightlifting team at Navarre to the one that will compete for the Raiders this season.

“That group last year did an amazing job and was one of the best ever from top to bottom,” Bagley said. “This year, we have a new crew, and to be honest, they have a lot to prove right now.”

Just when it seems like Luke Losquadro can’t one-up himself, he finds a way to do so.

Navarre’s senior swimming standout set school records in the 50 and 100 freestyle events Saturday in the 1-4A regional meet in Lake Brantley.
Those performances catapulted Losquadro into this week’s state meet in Stuart.

Jebari Mitchell has developed a knack for setting the tone with an explosive kick return.

He was at it again Friday night with Navarre trailing by a touchdown four minutes into its homecoming showdown with Enterprise.

Grady Kelly put his hands against the back of the bench on the Navarre sideline and leaned in, a rare moment for the senior star to get a much-needed breather. He was visibly exhausted and was almost certain he broke his finger before halftime.

For most of Friday night, Kelly and several of his fellow defensive linemen played both ways because of the starting offensive line in quarantine due to COVID-19 exposure.

Senior offensive lineman Aaron Smith had a bitter taste in his mouth after Navarre let a 27-point lead slip out of its grasp in a loss to Escambia last week.

Tim Grier grew up playing lacrosse in Maryland. But he didn’t play much after high school. He had a career in the Marines as a first sergeant and is now a Junior ROTC Instructor at Navarre High School.

Gabe Davis shot out of the backfield with a full head of steam, the defense with no chance to slow him down. In the blink of an eye, the rising senior was in the end zone, extending Navarre’s lead over Milton to double digits in the spring game Friday night at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.
