Navarre’s girls weightlifting team is one step closer to state.

The Raiders compete in the Region 1-3A regional Friday morning at Oak Leaf High School in Orange Park, with Navarre taking aim at its 14th consecutive regional crown.

Alyssa Herrick didn’t have to chase down the loose ball that was slowly rolling down the court in the final minutes of last Monday night’s game against Jay.

Navarre was up by more than 30 points. The only thing left to be decided was the final score.

Despite having the remainder of its regular season canceled because of a blanket quarantine, Navarre’s boys soccer team has moved into the top eight in the latest FHSAA regional rankings.

Ranked eighth, the Raiders are 8-4-2 on the season and haven’t played since Jan. 14.

It’s almost tournament time for Navarre’s soccer teams.

Both the boys and girls squads begin their district tournament title quests next week, with the boys playing at the Ashton Brosnaham Complex in Pensacola and the girls competing at Twin Oaks in Niceville.

Michael Carter grew up attending the Senior Bowl.

This week, instead of being a spectator, he’s part of the show. The former Navarre Raider and University of North Carolina running back will take part in Saturday’s game at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile.

Still displayed in the high school weight room is the state championship Navarre won two years ago in boys weightlifting.

Because the COVID-19 pandemic pulled the rug out from under last season, the Raiders technically go into this year as the reigning champs.

The point of the girls basketball season has been reached where the wear and tear of a long season is starting to take its toll.

Injuries and players missing time because of quarantine hasn’t helped Navarre’s cause in a season that has been a special one for the Raiders.

Late Friday night after the gym had mostly emptied out, Navarre head coach Terry Posey walked down a quiet hallway.

He was on his way back to the bus to join his team for the trip home after a gut-wrenching 45-44 loss to Pace, the top ranked team in Region 1-6A.
