Kelly Hayes was tough on her softball team after last Monday’s 1-0 loss at home to Elmore County in the Florida/Alabama Challenge.

But it’s only because she wants the best out of her team and she knows the potential it has even if it does have just one senior on the roster.

Levi Hawley has been in challenging situations before, but never in a setting he isn’t accustomed to.

Hawley and his Navarre teammates were playing baseball at Blue Wahoos Stadium, and the senior hurler admits that as cool as it was to play in one of the nation’s best minor league parks, there was added pressure.

More than a year after he last competed in the event, the Navarre senior was back at it Friday at the Andrews Invitational in Gulf Breeze.

And you can’t blame them. The NCAA tournament is three weeks of win-or-go home basketball, with joy and heartbreak and everything in between all rolled into one.

Tim Brewer isn’t sure if he’ll get a chance to play basketball beyond high school, but if the Subway All-Star Game Thursday was his final hurrah, he went out giving his best effort.

“This could be the last time playing for all I know. I’m going to take advantage of every opportunity, live life to the fullest every time I get on the court,” Brewer said.

Four quarters and four overtime periods were intense from start to finish, with neither Navarre nor Chiles giving much to the other in the way of opportunities to score.

The Raiders, in fact, held a lead over the state-ranked Timberwolves most of the way in a crucial District 1-2A flag football showdown on a warm and cloudy afternoon at Bennett C. Russell Stadium.

Olivia Warren had active hands on defense, knocking away a couple of pass attempts.

Skylar Burleson ran the point effectively and even drove inside, getting fouled on the way up for a shot. Tailor Ernst battled for rebounds and was scrappy on defense. She even knocked down a 3-pointer.

Navarre’s football schedule has been released, and the Raiders are set to open their 2021 season against Fort Walton Beach on Aug. 27.

The Raiders’ schedule includes six home games, including one against Warren Easton out of New Orleans in week two, and the Beach Bowl remains on the slate as well.

Navarre soccer standouts Cami Acevedo, Maia Vacks and Megan Kirby have added all-state to their list of accolades.

The Raider trio is among the 30 players in the state to earn the honor in 6A.

Navarre’s flag football team came into its showdown with Niceville Thursday night on a roll.

Five consecutive wins to start the year, including a pair of shutouts, had the Raiders (5-1) trending in the right direction.
