Abby Fogg saw the two things she wanted to see most from her Raider girls basketball team last Wednesday night in a 48-27 win in a preseason opener against Niceville at Fort Walton Beach.

Energy and effort. It’s a positive sign for a Navarre team that, while it will have a different look than the past couple of seasons, still expects to contend for a district title and more.

The regular season is complete for the University of West Florida football team. And now it’s on to the postseason.

The Argos won their seventh consecutive game Saturday afternoon, rolling past Mississippi College 56-21 at Robinson-Hale Stadium in Clinton.

The reigning 3A state champion Raiders had lifters place first and second in each of the 10 weight classes.

Kileigh Whited ran up the field in last week’s Gulf South Conference tournament opener hoping to make a play on the ball. A 70-yard sprint to glory. This was her golden opportunity to score a rare goal.

Brianna Pope stopped just outside the left side of the circle, putting the ball in the middle of the field, and Whited did the rest, running up to it and kicking it past the goalie and into an open net as she fell to the ground.

Jack Patching gets tangled up with a defender in an effort to get the ball away from him in the opening round of last week’s Gulf South Conference men’s soccer tournament.

He ends up winning the battle.

Navarre’s boys soccer team closed last season with just one win in its final 11 games. The Raiders finished with three wins in all.

But a new year has arrived, and optimism has been renewed as the Raiders gear up for the season ahead.

Cici Buffalino punctuated Navarre’s final game of the preseason Thursday night, punching in a goal that capped a shutout victory over Tate at the Navarre Soccer Complex.

Buffalino’s contributions in a 6-0 win on a mild November evening are hardly a surprise. She scored nine goals last season as a freshman and is well on her way to another big year.
