New law buffers funeral protests
A bright yellow “Don’t tread on me” flag stood out against a protective blanket of red, white and blue flags and posters, effectively symbolizing the defiant, patriotic atmosphere outside East Hill Church of God in Christ in Pensacola on June 22. It was a scene where hundreds of Americans lined the street, forming a human barrier outside the funeral ceremony for fallen soldier, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jesse Lamar Thomas Jr., who died June 10 while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistran. The counter protestors were geared up for the arrival of Westboro Baptist, a Kansas-based group renowned for inflammatory pickets at military funerals.

New hours for area immunization clinics
The Florida Department of Health in Santa Rosa County Immunization Clinics now have new hours of operation. Immunizations will be offered at the Milton location on Mondays and Thursdays, and at the satellite clinic in Gulf Breeze on Tuesdays.

HNFD Commissioners discuss plans for possible new station
The Holley-Navarre Fire District is looking for a location for a new fire station that will improve response times in the Holley area. The beginning phase of a possible new station was the topic of discussion at the district’s June 24 board meeting. The commissioners discussed the feasibility of property at the corner of Highway 87 and Bob Tolbert Road being the new location.

Fireworks on Navarre Beach offer free family fun
The night sky over Navarre Beach will once again be illuminated with colorful displays and patriotic booms tonight as the Tourist Development Council (TDC) and Navarre Area Chamber of Commerce will host the annual fireworks show for Independence Day.
