Proposed land buy stirs opposition for new courthouse
Sharon Glass agrees it is time to replace the 87-year-old county courthouse. However, she and other local Tea party leaders plan to fight Santa Rosa County’s plans to ask voters to buy new land for it. Opponents say the county has enough undeveloped land and should use a parcel already in inventory or consider a free land offer.

Gulf side beach enhancement project may need modified
County staff met with state agency officials Feb. 13, following vocal protests over two proposed projects for Navarre Beach. One project is seems to be moving forward and another is pending modifications after local and state Audubon Society chapters opposed the project, stating it poses a threat to shorebirds, which nest in Navarre Beach Marine Park and the surrounding area.

New water taxi for parade-goers
The Navarre Beach Mardi Gras parade is one of the most anticipated events of the year. As many as 25,000 people are expected to attend Feb. 22 and that means tens-of-thousands of cars crossing the Navarre Beach Causeway Bridge. Gary Hartman from Pirates Paradise in Navarre is hoping to make the trip a little easier for some by skipping the bridge and crossing the Santa Rosa Sound by boat.

Corrections officer arrested for sexual battery
An employee of the Santa Rosa Corrections Institution, 37-year-old Billy Chad Gibson, was arrested Feb. 13 and charged with 10 counts of Capital Sexual Battery on a child less than 12 years of age.

Not surprisingly, the candidate who has been in the District 4 race the longest, Rob Williamson, has the most campaign contributions so far. Williamson pre-filed to run last summer and made early monetary gains as the sole candidate.

Jesters’ Mardi Gras parade biggest ever
When the Navarre Krewe of Jesters decided last year to change their parade date to avoid a conflict with the Mardi Gras parade on Pensacola Beach, they did so in an effort to attract more participation from area krewes. The change achieved the desired results last year and helped add two more new krewes from Pensacola for this year’s parade on Feb 22.
