A potbellied pig named Buttercup is still in limbo after an item that would have classified her as a domestic pet was pulled from this week’s Pensacola City Council agenda at Tuesday’s agenda conference meeting. The pig’s owner has advocated the city make the necessary change, so Buttercup could remain the family’s pet.

Many palm trees in the area are now sporting brown leaves as a result of colder than normal temperatures this winter. Local experts agree the brown leaves don’t look the best but recommend leaving them on the trees rather than trimming them.

A one-week-old panther kitten was rescued by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists while conducting field research in mid-January at the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge in Collier County, east of Naples. FWC reported the 1-pound male kitten had a dangerously low body temperature and was nonresponsive.

According to an investigative report, historically low temperatures followed by rapid thawing lead to a valve failure and the inadvertent High Expansion Foam (HEF) discharge that resulted in the death of a civilian contractor Jan. 8 in King Hangar at Eglin Air Force Base. Three other Eglin personnel were treated with inhalation injures.

Whiting Field’s security team conducted an exercise Feb. 20 that tested elements of the base and mutual aid agreements with police and fire services from Santa Rosa County. According to NAS Whiting  Field Spokesman Jay Cope, “The Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield exercise is an annual force protection and anti-terrorism program that runs this year through Feb. 28.”
