Each year, Santa Rosa District Schools gather members of the school board, Santa Rosa Education Foundation and the community together to surprise the pick for Santa Rosa Teacher of the Year. This year, the group ventured to Allentown to announce Christal Bennett, Central School’s band teacher, as the district’s best.

Everyone seems to have New Year’s resolutions, even elected officials. Santa Rosa County Commissioner Ray Eddington, who represents district four which includes Holley and Navarre, said he is looking forward to 2024 as an important year for expanding and improving south Santa Rosa County’s infrastructure, as well as its recreational opportunities.  “We’re looking (forward) to a good year,” Eddington said.

Allison and Daniel Hartman have 11 children ranging in age from 3 to 25. Parenting for a quarter century, with another decade-and-a-half in front of them, Allison said the Hartmans have “kind of a different take on raising a family.” “What I’m seeing is a lot of coddling and ‘helicopter moms,’ parents who do basically anything for their kids,” she said. “Then when their kids graduate, they send them off to college and expect everything to work out.” With her church leaders’ blessing, Allison organized the “Raising Adults, Not Children” conference, to be held from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Woodbine Baptist Church, 4912 Woodbine Road.

January is National Blood Donor Month and this year; a blood shortage is making donations more needed. According to the American Red Cross, the U.S. is seeing the lowest number of people giving blood in 20 years. The number of people of people donating blood through the Red Cross has fallen by about 40% over that time.

Set Free Refuge is excited to announce their upcoming gala, Seeds of Strength. It will be held at Saint Sylvester’s Catholic Church at 6:30 PM on January 26th, 2024. This formal event will be an evening of resiliency, dinner, a silent auction, and dancing. Sherry Clynch, Fundraising Coordinator, stated the annual gala is the organization’s largest fundraiser each year. Money raised allows the organization to continue to provide mental health, as well as other services to survivors of human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
