Bird conservationists oppose beach projects
The two county-submitted Navarre Beach projects which made the cut into the third round of Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) early restoration funding, resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, are being opposed by bird conservationists, including local and state chapters of the Audubon Society.

Melvin wants better tourism staff accountability
Santa Rosa County has seen much success since breaking ties with TEAM Santa Rosa and bringing economic development back in-house. Commission Chairman Jim Melvin hopes to do the same with tourist development by placing related staff under the county’s economic development office.

Candidates debut in first debate
Nearly 50 people attended a Feb. 6 debate hosted by the Central Republican Club for the Santa Rosa County Commission District 4 seat, which represents the greater Navarre area. Currently five candidates are in that race – all of whom are Republican. The event gave commission hopefuls the opportunity to introduce themselves. Michael Sallmen, president of the club, moderated the event.

Sheriff’s office seeks suspected thief
The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office announced it is actively seeking 46-year-old Joseph Warran McMillan, Jr. in connection with multiple thefts of construction style batteries. Detectives recently concluded their investigation with sufficient evidence being collected to obtain multiple arrest warrants. McMillan is charged with three counts of criminal mischief, two counts of felony burglary and one count of felony larceny.

Governor pushes funding for seniors
Governor Rick Scott’s 2014-2015 funding recommendations include an increase of more than $33 million to support Florida seniors through the “Enriching Seniors Initiative.” Florida Department of Elder Affairs Secretary Charles Corley is praising Scott for pushing the initiative. Secretary Corley stated, “Through his Enriching Seniors Initiative, the Governor is providing funding to reduce waitlists for our frailest elders in need of services, expand programs that protect impoverished elders needing guardianship, and protect the welfare and rights of long-term care residents.”
