Hazardous waste center accepts sharps waste
Santa Rosa County provides a free and safe solution for residents who generate sharps waste. Those with home-generated sharps waste are asked not to place the items in their household garbage or recycle containers in order to help protect waste handlers, the public and the environment. Instead, residents are asked to take sharps waste in a store-bought sharps approved container with a secured lid to the Household Hazardous Waste Center located at the entrance of the central landfill, 6337 Da Lisa Road in Milton. Drop-off hours are Monday through Saturday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grill caused 16.5-acre fire
The 16.5-acre wildfire at Naval Live Oaks Saturday was caused by people grilling along the beach, according to Florida Forest Service personnel and the Office of Agricultural Law Enforcement.

Hurlburt Soundside beach, marina closed
The Hurlburt Field Soundside beach and marina are closed for swimming activities after the water tested positive for enteric bacteria, resulting in a determination of poor beach water quality, on a scale of good, moderate or poor, used by the Okaloosa County Department of Public Health.

Florida’s congressional districts rejected as gerrymandered
The Florida Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the state’s congressional maps don’t meet the requirements of a voter-approved constitutional amendment that prohibits political lines from being drawn to favor incumbents or a political party. The court ordered the Legislature to try drawing the maps again.

Blaze damages Tiger Point clubhouse
The clubhouse at Tiger Point Golf Club in Gulf Breeze caught fire Tuesday night but the cause of the blaze has yet to be determined, according to Midway Fire District Chief Jonathan Kanzigg.
