Recently teachers and students from second grade at Vineland Elementary School in Rotonda West, and first grade at Lamarque Elementary School in North Port, decided that instead of exchanging holiday gifts, they would hold a pet food drive for the homeless animals at the Suncoast Humane Society. In other generous and selfless acts of kindness, individuals Elizabeth, Maddie and Jessica collected donations for the animals, in place of accepting birthday gifts from family, friends and neighbors.

New York — Labrador retrievers still reign supreme after a quarter century as America’s most prevalent purebred dog. But French bulldogs are riding their je ne sais quoi toward new heights, and some lesser-known breeds are climbing the popularity ladder, according to American Kennel Club rankings released Monday. Hurlburt Field, Fla. — Airman 1st Class Jordan Artis, a vehicle management analysis journeyman from the 1st Special Operations Logistics Readiness Squadron, turned his childhood of playing with cars, into a career when he joined the Air Force in 2013.

Twenty years ago this week the Holley-Navarre Water System building burned including the financial records that were inside. There was an ensuing investigation by the Florida State Fire Marshal, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Internal Revenue Service. Two main suspects were named, but never charged because of the lack of concrete evidence. The statute of limitations has run out on this unsolved crime.

On Sunday, Feb. 21 a woman was robbed in the Publix parking lot in Navarre around 9:15 p.m. after buying the man cigarettes.  William Robbie Temples of the 8100 block of Fourth Street was arrested and charged with battery and robbery.
