This elusive group is elusive for a reason. They are very humble and do not want any recognition. “Our primary focus is to have the 11 families here for a remembrance ceremony – we do not want any credit,” said one of the members.  After a lot of arm twisting, we were able to get the names of those behind the ceremony and the housing and feeding for the more than 150 family members that will be in Navarre this week.  They are, Tammy Jones, Jerry Foster, Donna Sue Harvell, Adam Teichner, and Patrick Fitzgerald.

Six weeks ago, Gail Stangeland heard on the radio that the families of the 11 service members who perished in the Black Hawk crash on March 10, 2015, were coming to Navarre for a remembrance ceremony.  “I was passing by the makeshift memorial on the Navarre Causeway and it really bothered me,” Stangeland recounted.  “I knew the wives would be here and I wanted something for them.”

Eglin’s 33rd Fighter Wing reached a milestone last week when the newest fighter in the military’s inventory, the F-35 Lightening II, launched four GBU-12 guided munitions for the first time. Up until that time, launch of munitions from the aircraft was simulated. The weapons drop was originally scheduled for late spring of this year but was ahead of schedule.

The water crisis in Flint, Mich., began in April of 2014. Following a switchover to the Flint River as the city’s main water source, corrosive water conditions from the Flint River caused heavy metal leaching from the lead service pipes in the region. On Jan. 5, 2016, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder declared a state of emergency. Since that time, numerous individuals including many children have been exposed to extremely high levels of lead in their water, a cause of serious health problems. Needless to say, with investigations into the Flint, Mich., situation still ongoing, water quality has become a critical issue and prompted public speculation and worry.
