Local-Option Sales Tax on November ballot
Santa Rosa County Commissioners will again seek a local-option sales tax (LOST) in November to fund the building of a new courthouse on a site that has yet to be determined. The LOST would come on the heels of a gas tax implemented Jan. 1 that brought the taxes paid on gas from 6 cents to 12 cents. The gas tax must be used for road maintenance and upkeep. The referendum language for the LOST must be complete by June 1 and then Sept. 2 for the November ballot.

Crime spree suspects shot in Milton
The so-called modern day ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ suspects were shot during a standoff with police early Friday morning in Milton. Blake Edward Fitzgerald, 30, was killed and his girlfriend, Brittany Nicole Harper, 30, was shot multiple times and was transported to a local hospital.

Dr. Joe Stovall’s lifetime of ministry and service
“It’s been a real privilege to have had the opportunities that I’ve had,” said Dr. Joe Stovall, speaking of his many years of work in Christian ministry. Joe, a native of Mississippi, first graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. with a bachelor’s degree in ministry. Later, after his marriage to his wife Kathleen, they both moved to New Orleans and Joe went back to school, earning a Doctorate of Ministry degree from New Orleans Theological Baptist Seminary. Ministry and service have both been tremendous parts of Joe’s life.

Hot car bill passes Senate
Florida senators passed a bill on Thursday that will allow the rescue of unattended vulnerable pets or people from hot cars in the summer without civil liability. Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office receives several calls each summer about pets trapped in hot cars and left unattended.

Cochrane takes aim at Wounded Warrior Games
Captain Chris Cochrane spent nearly a month in a coma after suffering two strokes while deployed three years ago.
“I spent three and a half weeks in a coma. When I finally woke up, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move my right arm or leg,” Cochrane said. “I had to relearn to talk and relearn to walk. It took the better part of eight months before I left the hospital.”
