Santa Rosa District Schools now accepting applications for school guardians

Santa Rosa County District Schools is again recruiting and accepting applications for School Guardian. The Chris Hixon, Coach Aaron Feis, and Coach Scott Beigel Guardian Program was established in 2018 through the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act. In its initial report, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission found that having guardians in schools is the best way to ensure highly trained personnel are in place to respond immediately in the event of a school shooting.

Governor responds to severe weather in Florida Panhandle

Governor Ron DeSantis provided updates about the January severe weather event at the State Emergency Operations Center. Governor DeSantis issued Executive Order 24-03, which designates 49 counties as being under a state of emergency in order to maximize resources available to impacted counties. In preparation for the severe weather, on Monday Governor DeSantis activated the Florida National Guard.

Woman’s Death Spurs ‘Safe Exchange” Proposal

(By Ryan Dailey) The Florida House is moving forward with a bill that would allow courts to require that parents who share custody of children use “safe exchange” locations at county sheriff’s offices. The measure (HB 385) is named the “Cassie Carli law,” after a mother who in 2022 disappeared — and was later found dead — after meeting with the father of her child in Northwest Florida to make what is known as a timeshare exchange.

Northwest Florida is expecting severe weather tonight, Jan. 8 into Tuesday, Jan. 9. The National Weather Service in Mobile is providing updates on the weather and multiple county and local agencies, including schools, have issued statements on their plans during the severe weather:

Alcohol sales now allowed near schools, churches on Highway 98 corridor

Alcohol will be able to flow a little more freely now in south Santa Rosa County thanks to an amendment to the Land Development Code, which went into effect Jan. 1 after being approved last September.

The National Weather Service in Mobile is predicting severe weather conditions in the overnight hours of Monday night (Jan. 8) into Tuesday morning (Jan. 9) for our area. Santa Rosa County has been placed under an enhanced risk for severe weather.

Brandon Aydelott hearing moved to March 26

The question of whether Brandon Aydelott, 27, will be released after spending 10 years in Florida State Hospital was not answered when Aydelott went into court Thursday, Jan. 4. With two psychological evaluations ordered, Circuit Judge Clifton Drake rescheduled the hearing to March 26. Those psychological evaluations must be ready by the end of February. The calling of witnesses, including psychologists, is expected to take place at a later date.

Imogene Theatre begins new chapter with Liberty Church

The Historic Imogene Theatre is beginning a new chapter in its long history in 2024.

Liberty Church bought the 111-year-old building – an iconic landmark in downtown Milton – for $850,000 from the Santa Rosa Historical Society in December.
