The Pensacola Bay Bridge, closed for more than eight months, is finally drivable again — at least for two lanes of traffic.

But the bridge remains closed and local elected officials say they are waiting for the Florida Department of Transportation to announce the opening date and time. State Rep. Alex Andrade says he will be surprised if it’s not open by 10 a.m. on Friday.

Here are some of the Memorial Day ceremonies are planned for Santa Rosa County.

American Legion Post 382, in conjunction with Spectre Post 11367 Veterans of Foreign Wars will host a ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Navarre Park Pavilion. The guest speaker will be Lt. Colonel Retired Dan Schmidt. The Navarre High School Navy Junior ROTC will provide the color guard, national anthem singers and buglers for Taps. Various local organizations will lay wreaths in memoriam. The Navarre American Legion Post 382 will serve hamburgers and hot dogs following the ceremony.

The “Milton Cubed” on display in downtown Milton was unveiled Thursday. The cube, a four-sided metal frame, can be wrapped in various materials to display public art. The first theme was “Embrace Milton, Reject Racism.” The Milton City Council chose the art pieces on display.

The Board of County Commissioners approved spending $64,000 more on Navarre Park renovations in order to prevent future erosion. High waves during a recent severe weather event caused some erosion around a pipe. More rip rap has been added to the design. County officials said no fill left the site during the erosion event, but a small amount of sand did get into the Santa Rosa Sound. The county reported the incident to the county.

Even with the wind gusting and the Gulf of Mexico churned up by rough surf Friday morning, anglers still took their best shot at attempting to reel in a big catch on the Navarre Beach Fishing Pier.

Gulf Islands National Seashore, in coordination with local fire departments, contained a brush fire in the Naval Live Oaks Area May 21.

Fire crews and park staff are currently on scene to monitor the situation and remove any remaining tinder. The public is urged to use caution and avoid the area.
