The end of an era
Transition, change and reflection were the themes of the Navarre High School Baccalaureate Service held two days before graduation for 40 seniors and their families at Navarre United Methodist Church. Scripture readings, singing and the Navarre High School Chorus rounded out the service with personal expressions of faith and the promise of tomorrow.

Food pantries filling up
Two area food pantries received important donations during the past week from the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” campaign, which will help them meet the needs of local residents.

Bible reading permitted in Fla. school district
According to a nonprofit legal group, the Broward County Public Schools May 19 announced that students are permitted to read their Bibles as part of free reading time and during an Accelerated Reader Program.

Milton church premiers new film
A movie billed as a “modern day prodigal son story” debuted in two churches nationwide May 16 and one was the Hickory Hill Baptist Church near Milton. Pam Gallups from Hickory Hill said Pastor Carl Gallups is personal friends with “A Long Way Off” Executive Producer Jerry McGlothlin and that made the local advanced screening possible.

School district reviewing Supreme Court decision on prayer
In a divided decision, May 5 the Supreme Court of the United States upheld the right of local government leaders to open meetings with prayer. In a 5-4 vote, the Justices found such prayer does not violate the Constitution, even when stressing Christianity.

Survey results released last week suggest Americans will spend an average of nearly $163 on mom this year, down from almost $169 last year. The National Retail Federation’s 2014 Mother’s Day Spending Survey conducted by Prosper Insights and Analytics shows total spending is expected to reach nearly $20 billion.
