What do you get when you merge water and technology? A five-day STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) camp called Sea3PO hosted at the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station. Campers learned to take water samples, conducted research with microscopes and built and drove remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).

Gulf Pointe Academy (GPA), Navarre’s only private school, is relocating to meet growing demand after Santa Rosa County twice halted its expansion plans. The school and its 75 students will be moving to leased space at St. Sylvester Catholic Church when classes resume Sept. 1.

Santa Rosa District Schools received a District Grade of an “A.” The district was one of ten school districts in the State of Florida to receive the distinction for the 2013/14 school year. Additionally, the district has been one of only 6 school districts in Florida to have received an “A” each year since the inception of school grades.

Northwest Florida State College (NWF) is offering an evening option for students interested in earning a vocational certificate in Welding Technologies. The night program will begin this fall on the Niceville campus. Classes will be offered Monday through Friday, 3 to 10 p.m.

Holley-Navarre Intermediate School (HNIS) teacher Danielle Clark was presented the Florida Department of Education’s (DOE) Magic of Leadership award July 11 during a gala event recognizing the state’s top teachers. State Education Commissioner Pam Stewart, First Lady Ann Scott and Macy’s President Mike Krauter announced the four award winners.

Nearly 30 middle school girls from Santa Rosa County experienced science in fun and exciting ways June 23 – 27 at Pensacola State College (PSC). PEGASUS (Play, Engage, Grow, Achieve … Summer of Uplifting Science), the brainchild of PSC science faculty in partnership with the Santa Rosa County School District, was an effort to engage young females to participate in science and technology activities.

Without discussion among board members, the Santa Rosa County School Board unanimously voted June 26 to remove corporal punishment as a form of discipline in district schools. The move came after James McNulty, founder of Floridians Against Corporal Punishment in Public Schools, started advocating for a district ban in November 2013.
