Memorial Day: ‘It’s not about the boating or barbecues’
Monday, May 27 was Memorial Day. It was a beautiful, sunny day with comfortable temperatures and a gentle breeze blowing off the water at a ceremony held at Navarre Park. The day meant many things to different people in attendance, but U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Michael “Dane” Acord best put it in perspective.

Animal Welfare Club
The Animal Welfare Club of Woodlawn Beach Middle School has been busy this year. So far, the student club has gathered food and supplies to give to local rescues facilities and shelters, as well as organizing a spay and neuter informational campaign and “Pets are Forever” campaign to ensure that pets receive the love and necessities they deserve.

Girl Scouts, seniors get lift from experience
Dozens of badge-clad Girl Scouts held on to pots of colorful flowers to bring some cheer to senior citizens last week. The girls hand-delivered potted plants last Wednesday and visited with the residents at Bay Breeze Nursing and Retirement Center.

Volunteers help cancer survivors on “Road to Recovery”
Brenda Hamamura issued both a challenge and a promise when setting the 2013 goal for Navarre’s Relay for Life at $126,000. And last week, the community representative with the American Cancer Society and captain of the St. Augustan team had to “pay up” and make good on her promise.
