Mardi Gras season on the emerald coast started Saturday as the first parade rolled on Okaloosa Island. In Navarre, Mardi Gras is just around the corner, and the Krewe of Jesters is prepping for this year’s parade that certainly isn’t skimping on floats, beads or a good time.

County gives recycler 30 days to fix problems
The founders of West Florida Recycling appeared before commissioners last week, apologizing for and seeking to amend what County Administrator Hunter Walker described as chronic problems. Faced with no other option, the board decided to give the company 30 days to improve operations or face contract termination. In the meantime, county staff will solicit new bids which may or may not be utilized, depending on the company’s progress.

Guardian Ad Litem relocating
Thanks to the benevolence of Navarre property owners Steve and Ann Herring, Guardian ad Litem is set to relocate into office space with better accessibility at a discounted rate. The couple is planning to provide an in-kind discount of $200 per month toward the organization’s rent, which is funded by Santa Rosa County. The move will ultimately save the county $300 per month.

Garden Club gets $1500 for tree giveaway
The Santa Rosa County Commission voted Jan. 9 to provide $1500 for the Navarre Garden Club to purchase trees for a giveaway in celebration of Arbor Day, which is celebrated in Florida on the third Friday in January. Commissioners asked that the funding be used within the county, specifically at Green Up Santa Rosa, if possible.

Chamber president utilizes Google Glass for non-profit
Google has not yet released their futuristic eyewear Google Glass to the public, but Navarre Beach Chamber of Commerce president, Tony Alexander, was able to get his hands on a pair in order to help find missing children across the nation.

Derelict boat owner summoned to appear in court
Despite efforts to get his derelict boat out of the Santa Rosa Sound before his pretrial diversion agreement expired, Jeramiah Shastid was issued a notice by Santa Rosa County to reappear in court Jan. 16.

American Pickers headed our way!
Hosts of the popular History Channel television show “American Pickers” are coming to Florida this month, seeking barns, warehouses and buildings full of antiques, namely large, unusual and interesting collections. The trip is aimed toward taping new shows leading up to the May 2014 kickoff of the show’s fifth season.
