‘We’re off to the see the wizard …’
The classic movie, “The Wizard of Oz,” celebrates its 75th anniversary later this month, and the Santa Rosa County Library System is celebrating with special programs. The first “Munch with Munchkins” was held Aug. 1 at the Navarre Library and included a viewing of the movie, as well as free popcorn and children’s crafts.

Injured Marine chooses Navarre for new home
Sgt. Anthony McDaniel was all smiles during a ceremonial groundbreaking Aug.2 in Navarre. McDaniel lost both legs and his left hand when he stepped on an improvised explosive device (IED) in Kajaki, Afghanistan during his second deployment Aug. 31, 2010.

“When I was a kid in North Carolina, we had a cow fall out of the pasture,” said Vernon Trivett, 83, his weathered voice sprinkled with pure North Carolina speak. His smiling face suppressed laughter, as us “Flatlanders” asked, ”How’d a cow “fall” out of a pasture?”

Shrimp and a whole lot more
About 150 people enjoyed a delicious shrimp boil July 26 hosted by the Holley by the Sea Fishing Club. Before attendees headed through the line to enjoy the shrimp feast, three check presentations were made benefiting local charities.

BooFest 2014 featured golf, music, fun
A fun-loving crowd filled a huge portable tent at The Club at Hidden Creek July 26 to enjoy country music, country folks and to support area charities. PGA Tour pro Boo Weekley’s annual charity golf outing, BooFest, generates funds that are donated to nearly 20 charities including the Air Commandos Association, Fisher House Foundation, Navarre High School golf team and Milton High School athletics.

Historic preservation advocates fight FDOT plans
From atop the Imogene Theatre in downtown Milton, historic preservation advocate and mayoral candidate Wesley Meiss identified structures comprising the county seat’s historic district. Meiss opposes widening or building roadways which could threaten structures that contribute to the district’s status on the National Register of Historic Places.

Rescued: Water, land and air
Navarre Beach firefighters and lifeguards conducted a joint training earlier this year in an effort to better coordinate their responses to water rescues. The training was taken to new heights July 15 and 16 as a helicopter from Lifeguard Ambulance Service and personnel from Santa Rosa County Emergency Management joined in the training exercise. The groups worked on four different scenarios including a swimmer in distress, unconscious person, animal bite and a heart attack.
