In August of 2013 Congressman Jeff Miller introduced legislation that would give Escambia County the ability to issue fee simple title on leasehold property on Santa Rosa Island. That would include the current lease between Escambia and Santa Rosa County.

Turtle Center vision becomes reality (Jan. 3)

Changes will abound at Navarre Beach Park in the coming months — starting with the name of the park itself.

The beaches and shorelines in Navarre are always crowded, even when Navarre Beach is not. Just as visitors and beach-goers are vital to Santa Rosa County’s economy, the thousands of birds that grace the waterways are vital to the ecosystem and the environment.

Electric vehicle owners now have a place on Navarre Beach to charge their battery. Juana’s Pagodas has purchased a Blink electric car charging station, which is located just outside the restaurant.

Good news about a double-digit increase in annual tourism numbers was dampened by discussions of an allegation that minutes of the Santa Rosa County Tourist Development Council (TDC) were intentionally altered. The State Attorney’s Office has confirmed a review of the matter, which was discussed at the Nov. 20 council meeting.

The Santa Rosa County RESTORE council is making more progress toward formalizing proposed evaluation criteria to be used for recommending projects submitted to the county for funding through monies received related to the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  At the Nov. 14 meeting council members were presented with a draft of weighted criteria for four funding categories:  environment, economic development, infrastructure and tourism.

The construction of a new viewing pool at the Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center is being held up by the discovery of an underground utility cable that runs through the location of the proposed pool.

Bird enthusiasts will have their chance to gets some answers and insight to some of the common queries about coastal birds on Navarre Beach this Saturday at the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station.
