Turtle center offers three new programs
The Navarre Beach Sea Turtle Conservation Center is offering new programs. Snow Birds & Sea Turtles will be held the first and last Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. This program is for visitors to the area for the winter months to enjoy refreshments while learning about Northwest Florida sea turtles and the Navarre Beach 2013 nesting season. Cost is $5 per person.

Busy lifeguard season draws to a close
The temperatures have cooled, the water is now smooth, and the beach seems almost deserted. With very few visitors dotting the beach, Sunday marked the end of the 2013 lifeguard season.

Navarre Beach hotel set for 2015 opening
The Santa Rosa County Commission is currently considering incentives requested by developers planning to rebuild a nationally affiliated hotel on the site of the former Navarre Beach Holiday Inn. One of the requests, to forgive roughly $2.9 million in property taxes owed on the parcel, has been called unfair by some local residents. Ultimately, however, that request might not even be allowable.

Marine Science Station hosts international guests
The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station is used to having plenty of guests – human and marine life – each day. However, last week was a little different when the NBMSS and Northwest Florida Marine Education and Discovery of Gulf Ecosystems, Inc. (EDGE) teamed up with the Gulf Coast Citizen Diplomacy Council to host a group of Russian visitors , who came to the U.S. as part of the Department of State’s International Ecotourism and Environmental Outreach program.

Beach restoration funding uncertain
Although Santa Rosa County authorized consultant Coastal Tech to seek permitting for Navarre Beach restoration at the beginning of 2013, it remains unclear how commissioners will actually pay for the projected $10-12 million project, which could start next year.
