Out and About

The 2019 Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday begins tomorrow – Friday, May 31 and ends Thursday, June 6. During this sales tax holiday period, qualifying items related to disaster preparedness are exempt from sales tax. The sales tax holiday does not apply to:

Tahe rental or repair of any of the qualifying items. Or (sad to say they had to spell the following out… sales in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment, or airport.

I see quite a few things I would like to stock up on during the sales tax holiday. When I asked Gail what the editorial was about this week, she told me it was that we (Navarre) should be prepared in case there is a hurricane. And, as the boss, I immediately thought that if we are telling others to be prepared, we should be prepared. Currently we have a yellow furniture strap holding the metal sides of our generator up. Obviously – the rust got to it after 10 years. I immediately went to my computer and emailed the repair quote back to the vendor that sent it to us in November and said, “We are ready to have a new case for our generator.”  If we are going to preach – we need to lead by example. We all hope there are no H words this year – but it is better to be prepared than sorry. And prepare as much as you can early in the season.

We are also excited that Okaloosa Gas is laying lines close to our office because I’m hoping to get rid of the propane tanks that are huge and take up a lot of room. We still have the same propane gas in them that we had when they were installed. Thankfully – we haven’t had to use the generator except for the seldom power outage.

I had the occasion to go to the beach during the holiday weekend and I saw all the traffic backed up on Gulf Blvd. The four-way stop was the culprit. There was traffic backed up as far as the eye could see west on Gulf Blvd. And, it isn’t just our visitors that are suffering. The condos have to be cleaned and maintained and what about pizza delivery? The back-up lasted well past 8 p.m. We are talking to a few people that can do something about this – because something has to be done. Thankfully the timing on the causeway light was changed to last longer than 12 seconds after videos were shown to county commissioners and emails were sent. They can’t change the timing themselves – but they know how to get in touch with those that do. The Garcon light needs to be adjusted as well. I came down the Garcon Bridge after graduation because I didn’t want to be caught in the beach traffic only to be delayed by a light cycle that only lasted 15 seconds for those wanting to turn east on 98 from the Garcon Bridge. The traffic was backed up significantly. They also need to add a SunPass-only lane farther north.  Most people were waiting in line to pay their toll and those of us with prepaid tolls had to wait in line with them or play chicken with oncoming traffic. Which – is illegal because it is a double line – and wrong because you shouldn’t play chicken with oncoming traffic. Obviously – but I don’t want to be accused of endorsing playing chicken with oncoming traffic.
