Gulf Breeze High receives threat, suspect charged with felony

| Staff Reporters
A 16-year-old girl is facing a felony after she allegedly made a threat against Gulf Breeze High School on Oct. 8.

According to the Gulf Breeze Police Department, who handled the case, they were informed of a school shooting threat at GBHS via Snapchat, a social media and messaging app.

Officers with Gulf Breeze Police responded immediately and made contact with the suspect, later identified as Brooklyn Andrus, 16. Andrus, a student at GBHS, was secured and placed into custody less than six minutes after police were notified.

The threat was later deemed not credible.

“School threats will not be tolerated in Santa Rosa County Schools and The Gulf Breeze Police Department will take every threat seriously to ensure the safety of all students and staff,” GBPD said in a statement.

GBHS was placed in a “secure facility” procedure due to the social media threat. Nadia Colin, the public information and family and community outreach officer for the school district, said the measure was initiated to ensure the safety of all students and staff.

“The secure facility lasted approximately five minutes and concluded at 1:30 p.m.,” Colin said. “The source of the threat was quickly identified by administration and law enforcement. It was quickly determined the threat was not credible. At no time were any students or staff in danger. Parents and families were provided with a call out and email message shortly after this occurred. We appreciate the swift action of our school administration, the school resource officer, and Gulf Breeze Police Department. These types of threats will not be tolerated in Santa Rosa County.”
