Argonauts bring 20 new players on board on signing day

Coming off its inaugural season, the University of West Florida football team added even more talent to its roster Wednesday, signing 17 high school football players. The Argonauts added three mid-year transfers as well.

Eleven of the players are on the offensive side of the ball and eight are on defense. The other is a kicker.

“It’s a great day and an opportunity to add depth at a lot of positions that we needed,” West Florida head coach Pete Shinnick said.

The third recruiting class in program history includes Pace running back Anthony Johnson, who rushed for 4,849 yards and 57 touchdowns in his career, including for 1,953 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior.

“In the skill positions, we got better across the board,” Shinnick said. “Bringing in Anthony Johnson from nearby Pace adds to our backfield and makes this one of the better classes we’ve had.”

Of the 20 signees, 17 are from Florida. The other three are from Alabama.

The new players will join a team that has more than 90 returnees, including 19 starters from an Argos team that went 5-6 overall and 4-5 in the Gulf South Conference.

The 2017 season opens Sept. 2 with a road game against Missouri S&T. The home opener at Blue Wahoos Stadium is set for Sept. 9 against Midwestern State out of Texas.
