The Santa Rosa County Board of County Commissioners approved a motion Aug. 13 to schedule a public hearing regarding a possible gas tax increase.
The county’s gas tax is currently 6 cents per gallon, however, the county has the ability to increase it to a maximum of 12 cents. The gas tax in Santa Rosa County is far less than in Escambia (11 cents) and Okaloosa (12 cents) counties. Walton County has a 7-cent tax.
The hearing will include two parts – the levy of a ninth-cent local gas tax and the levy of a 5-cent local gas tax. The 5-cent option, if approved, can increase the tax by any amount up to 5 cents.
