Officials will not press charges against a child they say accidentally set fire to the family’s garage June 6.
The home, located at 2610 Hidden Creek Drive, was destroyed in the fire, which started around 9 a.m. while the family was getting ready for church.
According to Holley-Navarre Fire Chief Ron Norton, the fire spread rapidly to an upstairs living area and the home’s attic before firefighters were able to bring it under control.
He called a “second alarm” to bring additional manpower and equipment from surrounding departments to the scene.
Norton said the 4,700-square-foot home sustained major fire damage and a large portion of it had collapsed, hampering the extinguishment.
Darrell and Jean Watkins moved their family into the home just six weeks before the fire.
The Florida State Fire Marshal’s Office is not releasing the child’s name, according to spokesman Kayla Anderson.
